About The Whitchurch Inn
Steeped in 200 years of history, The Whitchurch Inn is a traditional English pub full of character and warm welcomes in the heart of Tavistock.

Our History
The Whitchurch Inn has been part of village life since 1820, when it first opened its doors as a coaching inn for weary travellers making their way between Plymouth and Exeter. Over the years, it’s been a place to rest, refuel, and raise a glass—with more than a few stories shared along the way.
In Victorian times, the inn became a lively hub for the local mining community, when tin and copper were booming in the area. Deals were made, friendships forged, and no doubt a fair few celebrations spilled into the night.
While times have changed, the spirit of the inn hasn’t. We’ve carefully kept the building’s historic charm, while adding just enough modern comfort to make everyone feel at home. Step through our doors and you’ll find the past and present living happily side by side.
Our Approach
Food Philosophy
We believe great food starts with great ingredients. Our head chef creates traditional pub classics with a modern touch, using fresh, local produce sourced from within 30 miles of Tavistock whenever possible. It’s all about honest flavours, seasonal cooking, and food made with care.
Drink Selection
Whether you’re after a proper pint, a crisp glass of wine, or something a little stronger, we’ve got you covered. Our drinks list features local real ales, fine wines, and premium spirits—handpicked to offer something for every taste. We’re proud to support local breweries and distilleries wherever we can.
Community Spirit
As a family-run pub, being part of the local community means everything to us. We host regular events, support local charities, and aim to be a place where everyone feels welcome—from lifelong regulars to first-time visitors.
About Us
At The Whitchurch Inn, we’re all about the simple things done well—good food, good drink, and good company. Tucked away in the heart of Devon, our pub isn’t just a place to eat or have a pint—it’s where neighbours catch up, walkers warm their boots by the fire, and first-timers often leave with new friends.
We’re proud to serve local ales, seasonal produce, and proper home-cooked meals, all brought to you by a friendly team who love what they do. Whether you’re here for a Sunday roast, a quiet pint, or a break from the bustle, you’ll always find warmth, heart, and a genuine welcome.

Meet The Team

Joe Kinsey
2024, he became the proud owner, alongside Abi, with a clear vision: to create a
welcoming, community-focused pub where locals and visitors alike can relax,
connect, and enjoy great food and drink in a friendly atmosphere.
Alongside running The Whitchurch Inn, Joe also serves as a retained firefighter in
Tavistock – a role that reflects his deep roots in the area and his commitment to
serving the local community. His background in both hospitality and public service
helps shape the warm, down-to-earth spirit that defines The Whitchurch Inn today.

Abi Kinsey
grown up in the area and worked in a variety of pubs and restaurants across
Tavistock and the surrounding area, she brings with her a solid background and a
strong connection to the local community.
Over the years, Abi has taken on many roles within The Whitchurch Inn itself,
including chef and assistant manager. In August 2024, she became co-owner
alongside Joe, focusing on the behind-the-scenes work that keeps everything
running smoothly. Alongside her role at the pub, Abi also works in contract catering,
quietly juggling both responsibilities with a steady, practical approach.
Her experience and commitment help ensure that The Whitchurch Inn continues to
be a welcoming place for everyone who walks through the door.

Holly & Ralph
The Whitchurch Inn is very much a family-run pub, and that includes Holly and
Ralph. Holly, Joe and Abi’s daughter, brings plenty of personality and a healthy dose
of sass to the place. Whether she’s charming the regulars or keeping the grown-ups
on their toes, she’s very much part of the character and charm of the pub.
Ralph, the family dog, is just as much a fixture – friendly, laid-back, and always on
the lookout for a spare biscuit or two. Between them, they help make The
Whitchurch Inn feel warm, lively, and full of heart.

DARREN WHITE
Born and raised just down the road, Darren has always had a strong connection to the local area – and its incredible produce. With years of experience working in well-regarded kitchens across the region, he’s developed a style that blends classic techniques with bold, modern flavours.
Now back on home turf, Darren is excited to craft menus that celebrate the best of what our area has to offer. From comforting favourites to innovative new dishes, everything he creates is made with care, quality, and a commitment to local sourcing wherever possible.
Come in, say hello, and enjoy something special – cooked with heart, right here at home.
